Want to help Puerto Rico recover from Hurricane María? Do you live in a US state?
This is what all of us need to do in addition to sending supplies. Use this link https://www.house.gov/htbin/findrep to find your representative and write:
Dear Congressman/Senator X,
Congress MUST include emergency supplemental appropriations funding for Puerto Rico now. Anything less would be irresponsible and immoral.
At a minimum, any legislation to assist Puerto Rico during this critical time, should include: a) immediate emergency disaster relief funding, b) critical infrastructure, housing and energy investments, c) federal health care funding parity, & d) economic tools to quicken the recovery and make Puerto Rico self-reliant over time.
The 3.4 million US Citizens residents of Puerto Rico are suffering a calamity never before seen in modern history. Will you publicly commit to supporting immediate emergency supplemental funding for disaster relief and recovery in Puerto Rico? As your constituents, we are counting on your support.
Thank you for your attention to this important issue.
Sincerely,

Gracias por contribuir a la recuperación de nuestra isla, Puerto Rico!

THE DAY AFTER THE CALL, PLEASE SEND A THANK YOU EMAIL.

I’m calling to urge [NAME OF CONGRESS PERSON] to support an immediate emergency relief package for Puerto Rico to assist the 3.5 million U.S. citizens living in the Island. Hurricane María made a direct hit on Puerto Rico, devastating the island’s infrastructure, and causing flooding, landslides, and deaths. Puerto Rico has faced a decade-long economic crisis, making recovery from hurricane Maria even more difficult. Any emergency relief funding measure for Puerto Rico should also take into consideration the dire financial crisis facing the island and should therefore contain the following key elements:
a. Immediate disaster relief funding for Puerto Rico/USVI similar to the scope included in the Hurricane Harvey/Irma law already approved by Congress.
b. Emergency infrastructure investments to restore electricity, modernize the grid, restore water, housing, businesses, roads, and other key infrastructure.
c. Health care parity in all federal programs. HHS has already declared a health emergency on the Island and having less funding levels than states causes an even bigger strain on the health system now after the Hurricane. Hospitals have been destroyed and the health infrastructure is as important as the physical infrastructure.
d. Economic development tools so that the recovery can be quick and Puerto Rico can be self-sustaining in the medium to long term.
Will [NAME OF CONGRESSPERSON] do everything [HE/SHE] can to assist Puerto Rico? Will [HE/SHE] commit, publicly to do so?
Thank you so much for your time.
