Renowned artist and writer Antonio Martorell and Rev. Luis Cortés Jr. will be honored at September event

BoricuActivatEd, a nonprofit dedicated to empowering Puerto Rican communities through advocacy and participatory democracy, is preparing to commemorate its seventh anniversary this fall and holding its inaugural awards ceremony. Through its workshops held in communities across the country as well as in school-based settings, BoricuActivatEd has worked to improve conditions in Puerto Rico and amplify the voices of the Puerto Rican Diaspora across the mainland.

During the anniversary celebration, which will be held in Washington, D.C. on September 25, 2024, BoricuActivatEd will honor two distinguished Puerto Ricans, artist Antonio Martorell and Reverend Luis Cortés, President and CEO of Esperanza, for their exceptional contributions to the community. Martorell, a renowned artist, writer, and advocate for Puerto Rican culture, has been recognized for his commitment to preserving and promoting the Island’s artistic heritage. Martorell was awarded the National Medal of Arts last year by President Biden. Cortes founded the premiere Hispanic faith-based Evangelical network in the United States. Today, with an extensive national network of Hispanic faith and community-based organizations, Philadelphia-based Esperanza is one of the leading voices for Latinos in America.

“We are proud that our organization has grown in seven short years to empower diverse and underserved communities, foster resilience, and promote equitable opportunities,” said Jennice Fuentes, President and CEO of BoricuActivatEd. “Our mission is rooted in inclusivity and empowerment, ensuring that everyone, regardless of age, race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation, has the tools to create meaningful change.  Thanks to our team of volunteers and supporters, we have succeeded beyond our imagination.”

BoricuActivatEd operates with the support of volunteers, donors, grants, and partner organizations, enabling the organization to empower individuals through education and advocacy.  Through its workshops, which have been held from coast to coast, more than 5,000 people have gained skills in participatory democracy and civic engagement.
